چکیده

We present an overview of multi-year efforts aimed at developing technology to support natural telepresence over time for off-line surgical training, and over space for on-line or “live” remote consultation. Our goal is to capture and display high-fidelity, 3D graphical reconstructions of the actual time-varying events, allowing observers to change their (stereo) viewpoints naturally, by walking around, leaning forward/backward, rotating their head, etc. We describe the processes we use in our early prototypes, and present some experimental results. ∗University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dept. of Computer Science †University of Kentucky, Dept. of Computer Science ‡University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dept. of Surgery §Brown University, Dept. of Computer Science ¶Göteborg University and the University College of Bor̊as ‖University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dept. of Anesthesiology

Surgical telepresence: the usability of a robotic communication platform

INTRODUCTION The benefits of telepresence in trauma and acute surgical care exist, yet its use in a live, operating room (OR) setting with real surgical cases remains limited. METHODS We tested the use of a robotic telepresence system in the OR of a busy, level 1 trauma center. After each case, both the local and remote physicians completed questionnaires regarding the use of the system using...

Using real-time stereoscopic 3D for remote training on complex assembling/disassembling sequences

This paper describes the results of the collaboration between our research group and a large mechanical industry exploring the potential of VR for training purposes. The outcome is a distributed, industry oriented system used for remote training on maintenance operations, developed with the purpose of facilitating the instruction phases, reduction of travel costs, and introduction of more appea...

Improving, Expanding and Extending 3D Telepresence

For over a decade we have been pursuing a vision of threedimensional (3D) telepresence. Our primary driving problem is 3D medical consultation. Our basic goal is to enhance and expand medical diagnosis and treatment for lifecritical trauma scenarios by providing an advising health care provider and a distant medical advisee a “live” highfidelity sense of 3D presence with each other. Here we pro...
